Types and scales of RC cars

There are several types and scales of RC cars. A simple division can be made for example by splitting up circuit, and off-road. In both cases the cars can be driven by means of IC (Internal Combustion) engines or electro motors. Finally there are several scales in each one of these types, that we race with at the AMCA track.

IC 1/10 scale
At the AMCA we race with 2 different IC 1/10 scale models:

  • The long time established class of the slightly bigger 235mm (this is the width of the chassis) class. This class uses 2.5 cc IC engines and wide foam tyres. There is always a loyal group of drivers for this class, however the number of competitors per season varies quite a lot.. For this class there are relatively little rules so that bigger or minor changes can be made on the car. Obviously the driving skills at high speeds are crucial at a race. The bodies look simple as for the design, but provide extreme down force.
  • The little bit smaller brother in the 1/10 scale IC class is the so called 200mm, which at this moment is the most popular class, in which almost every RC car manufacturer nowadays offers a model in the market. This class uses a 2.1 cc IC engine and depending on the sub class uses different types of tyres. Nowadays the Kyosho competition is very popular and within the 200 mm class there is a split up in 3 models: Standard, Expert, and Pro class. Dependent on the class there are different regulations, from very strict regulations in the Standard class, in order to keep the costs as low as possible, until virtually no rules in the Pro class, obviously with corresponding costs.

IC 1/8 scale
RC cars are available in many different types and shapes, however with an acceleration of 0 to 100 kilometre per hour in less than 2 seconds, top speeds above 120 km/h, it is no wonder that the IC 1/8 scale class are considered as the Formula 1 of the RC cars. The 4-wheel driven IC 1/8 scale cars are driven by very powerful 3,5 cc engines and add a total new dimension to the RC car racing sport. All IC 1/8 scale cars have independent suspension and shock absorbers, where all setting that you can think of, like in Formula 1, can be changed, depending of the weather and/or track conditions. Other than that, the IC 1/8 scale cars have a central disk brake that works on the rear wheels and a automatic 2 gear transmission. All of this, in combination with a GT2 body, for the extremely important down force for this class. Driving a IC 1/8 scale car with its extreme power, dazzling speeds, is incomparable with any other class.

LargeScale
The LargeScale class are 1/5 scale (for Touring cars) or 1/6 scale (for the Trucks).  The length of the car is approximately 900 mm, 380/390 mm wide and 245/255 mm high, depending of the used model of the body. The minimum weight is 10 kg for a 1/5 scale Touring car and minimum 12 kg for a 1/6 scale Truck. The engine is limited to a 23cc 2-stroke engine that runs or normal lead free gasoline, in combination with 2-stroke oil for the lubrication. The LargeScale cars are 2-wheel driven, at the rear wheels, and disc brakes, mechanical or hydraulic controlled, on all 4 wheels. The tyres of LargeScale cars have many different profiles and hardness, which can be used, depending of the weather and/or track conditions.

Electro 1/10 scale
The Electro 1/10 scale is one of the most popular classes at the AMCA race track. The cars are 4-wheel driven, relatively easy to build, and are driven by means of small electro motors and six rechargeable cells. The Electro 1/10 scale cars are very quite, and very fast. In a race speeds up to 80 km/h can be reached. Of course the suspension of these cars can also be completely set up in order to maximaise the grip and speed under different conditions. The rubber tyres are available in different compounds, and hardness. Drivers in this class will have useful driving and soon develop a high level of experience skills. At the AMCA we race in two different Electro classes:

  • Electro 4WD stock. Only with touring car body, and the standard AMCA club motor is compulsory. In the 2006 season we use the GM 17x2 stock motor and compulsory use of the marked long life brushes GM 97315. Also we allow the Purple Bull 18x2 motor.
  • Electro 4WD modified. Only with touring car body, motor minimum 12 turns, so more than 12 is also allowed.
Both of these Electro classes only drive full rubber tyres.

Stockcars
This type of RC car is the oldest type of RC racing cars. Around 1973 this class of racing has started at various tracks in The Netherlands. Originally these cars are derived from the full scale models, which race at oval tracks. Stockcars are powered by 3,5 cc engines. During the time of construction and the first few years of the AMCA race track this has been an important racing class, which is still visible by looking at the Stockcar oval in front of the drivers stand and pit lane as well as the numerous Stockcar attributes in the canteen. Driving Stockcar is an exiting, competitive and affordable race class. Unfortunately at this moment there is no active Stockcar racing anymore.
